Diethyl methylmalonate is readily used as a moderately bulky nucleophile in organic synthesis. Diethyl methylmalonate is also used as a reagent to synthesize 7-alkylaminopyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines, compounds that have antifungal properties.

生产方法:将草酰丙酸二乙酯加热至激烈逸出一氧化碳,温度130-150℃。放出的气体减少后,逐步上升高温度,使液体回流直至气体逸尽。蒸馏得甲基丙二酸二乙酯,收率97%。
